What it’s really like running a husband + wife photo and video business
When we tell people we work together full-time as a married couple, we usually get one of two reactions: “That’s so cool!” or “I could never do that!” And honestly? We get it. Running a business together isn’t always easy but it’s hands-down one of the best parts of our story.
We wanted to peel back the curtain a little bit and share what it’s really like to run Wyld Story together as a husband and wife team, what we’ve learned along the way, and why we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Us in Mammoth last week!
The Perks:
First off, it’s awesome having a built-in creative partner you trust implicitly. When we walk into a wedding or a project shoot, there’s no guessing what the other person is thinking. We know each other’s strengths, how to communicate without speaking and how to tag-team when things get crazy.
We share the same vision for storytelling and the kinds of projects we want to say yes to. It makes decision-making so much easier when your business partner also happens to be your favorite adventure buddy.
And honestly? The biggest perk is the memories we get to make together. We’ve travelled internationally and taken countless road trips through California. That’s something we don’t take for granted!!
The Challenges:
Working with your spouse means you’re basically always “on.” It can be tough to separate work life from home life, especially when you’re both passionate about what you do. We’ve learned to set intentional boundaries (like making rules of when we can’t talk about work and incorporating true sabbath into our life once a week).
Creative differences happen too. There are times when one of us envisions a shot or edit one way and the other sees something totally different. But those moments have actually made us stronger communicators. We’ve learned to lean into each other’s strengths, compromise when needed, and trust the other person’s instincts.
Our Rhythm:
After a few years of trial and error, we’ve found a rhythm that works for us. Alyssa handles all things social media, pre-planning, client communication, and wedding day photography. Tucker manages video editing, gear organization, and directing the big creative vision on set.
On wedding days, we work together seamlessly. Alyssa is fully client-facing and sets up all the shots so that Tucker can focus on the creative eye for the day! We love working together as a team!
Why We Love It:
At the end of the day, Wyld Story was built on our love for storytelling, adventure, and people. Getting to build something meaningful with your best friend is a dream we didn’t always know we could have.
It’s not about getting rich or becoming some massive agency. It’s about capturing stories that matter, creating experiences that feel like you, and getting to do it together. And honestly? It makes every challenge worth it.
If You’re a Couple Considering a Husband + Wife Team:
We get it. Booking vendors for your wedding is a big deal. But if you’re considering working with a husband and wife photo + video duo, we promise it’s a vibe!
You get double the perspective, double the care, and a team that truly gets what your wedding day means. We’ve also been on the other side ourself (only 4 years ago!) so we GET IT.
